Your fostering journey

Your fostering journey starts here! if you’re reading this section, it’s probably because you want to know what happens next...

Below is a step by step guide outlining what you can expect at each stage of the journey to becoming an approved foster carer in Dudley.

  •    STEP ONE

You have read about fostering, looked at our frequently asked questions, checked you meet our basic criteria and most importantly you’re interested in helping make a difference to a child’s life.

You have contacted us to find out more by calling 01384 815833 or by completing our online contact form.

  •    STEP TWO

Our fostering team will get in touch with you by telephone and then arrange to visit you in your home to answer your questions and to make sure that fostering is right for you and your family.

You will be allocated a social worker who will visit you at home to carry out your assessment.

You will also attend a fostering preparation training course called skills to foster with other potential foster carers, so you are fully prepared to meet the needs of different children.

During the assessment we will also contact your referees and carry out a number of checks, including an Enhanced Criminal Records Bureau check (DBS). The process can take around six months as we need to ensure you are ready to look after a child or children who have experienced difficulties in their lives.

  •    STEP FOUR

Once the assessment is finished and you have completed your training, you will attend a ‘fostering panel’ supported by your assessing social worker.

At this panel your assessment will be discussed and a decision made as to whether you will be approved as a foster carer.

  •    STEP FIVE

Congratulations! You’re a fully approved foster carer. You’re ready for your first placement and will receive ongoing training and support.
